Radio Roku Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
All SoundBridge devices work with Radio Roku.
Radio Roku is officially supported on the following web browsers:
| Windows: | Windows XP SP2 or Vista. |
| Internet Explorer 6 or 7, or Firefox 2.x |
| |
| Mac: | Mac OS X 10.4.x |
| Safari 2.x or Firefox 2.x |
Other configurations may work with Radio Roku, but are not supported.
The PC/Mac Player feature (for playing music in your browser) requires that the standard multimedia plugins for your platform be available and enabled. This means Windows Media Player on Windows, and QuickTime on the Mac.
In order to control and upgrade your SoundBridge devices on your local network, you must have the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), version 1.5.0_09 or later installed. Java is a standard installation on the Mac, and the latest Java is available via a Software Update. If you are running Windows, it is likely that the Java Runtime Environment needs updating. Visit http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp to see if you need Java or to install the latest Java software.
Verify you have the latest version here, http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp, by clicking the "Verify Installation" button.
Registration for Radio Roku is a two-step process. First you create an account, which includes an email address. Then, you will receive a confirmation email that contains a link. Click the link to activate your account. This two-step process confirms that you are the owner of the email address submitted, and that you entered your address properly.
Should you fail to receive the confirmation email in a timely manner (within approximately 10 minutes), first check your email programs or ISP's junk email or "spam" filters. Sometimes mail from unrecognized addresses will be erroneously treated as spam and not delivered.
If you still can't find the email, please contact Roku's Customer Support department, and include the email address that you used when you subscribed. The Customer Support department will be able to activate your account for you. You can reach Customer Support by clicking this link: http://www.rokulabs.com/support_sb.php
Using Radio Roku With a Roku SoundBridge Device
Some of Radio Roku's advanced features use a Java "applet" -- a small program that runs within your Web browser software. In order to discover, upgrade and control your SoundBridge devices from within the Radio Roku web page, you must be running a recent version of the Java Runtime (see System Requirements, above), and you must "trust" this applet when asked by your browser. Normally, Java applets can't access local network resources. This "trust" step allows the applet to access your computer's local network connection, so that it can find and control your SoundBridge devices.

If the Java Runtime on your PC is outdated, misconfigured or not installed, you may see an error message when you try to discover devices.
In Firefox on Windows, if you don't have the Java Runtime installed and you try to discover devices, you will see a message telling you that a plugin needs to be installed. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the Java Runtime environment.
In Internet Explorer on Windows, you may see the page simply say "Please Wait", with a small error message in the status bar at the bottom of the window, reading "error on page". What are the system requirements to use Radio Roku? section (above) to install or update the JRE.
If you believe that the JRE is installed, it may need to have its configuration adjusted.
If you are on Windows, open the C:\Program Files\Java\jre <version>\bin folder
Run javacpl.exe
Click on the "Security / Trusted Certificates" tab. Is Roku listed? If it's not, then you will need to close all instances of your web browser. Revisit Radio Roku, select discover on the devices widget and when prompted, accept that you trust Radio Roku.
In the advanced tab under Applet Tag Support, check to be sure that your browser is enabled (Firefox is shown as "Mozilla")

When you try to discover your SoundBridge devices, you should see a message that says "Please Wait...", with the row of periods growing as the search continues. If you see this message for a few seconds, but then no devices are found, there are some steps you can try:
Click the "Try Again" button to try again.
Reboot your SoundBridge device, then click the Try Again link in the browser
Some VPN (virtual private network) software is known to interfere with device discovery. If your PC or Mac is running VPN software, try completely disabling the VPN software before doing a server discovery. Or, use the manual IP address procedure below.
If your PC or Mac is "multi-homed" (has more than one network connection active, for example an Ethernet connection and also a Wi-Fi connection), try disabling all but one network connection during discovery.
If none of the above steps work, your network configuration may not be allowing passage of the information needed by the Java applet to automatically discover devices. You can enter your SoundBridge's IP address manually:
On your SoundBridge, go to the System Configuration menu
If your SoundBridge is using Wi-Fi, choose "Show Wi-Fi Status". If it's using Ethernet, choose "Show Wired Ethernet Status"
Take note of the IP address shown on your SoundBridge screen.
On the Find Devices page where the "No devices were found" message appeared, click the link that says "click here to add a device by IP address".
Enter the IP address of your SoundBridge into the field, then click Continue, and follow the on-screen instructions.
The Radio Roku web site itself is currently available only in English, but other languages are coming soon.
The Radio Roku services, however, are already fully international-savvy, with support for radio station names and song information in any language.
The SoundBridge also includes international support, but may not be able to display non-Roman characters, depending upon the SoundBridge model and the font size chosen. Any characters that cannot be displayed are replaced with a "box" character to indicate a missing character.
SoundBridge models that use LCD displays can display most accented characters, but cannot display non-Roman characters (e.g. Japanese, Chinese, Cyrillic).
VFD-equipped SoundBridge models can display a wider variety of characters, depending upon which fonts are installed in the particular SoundBridge model's ROM. Because certain characters require more individual pixels (dots) to be legible (for example, most Asian characters), some languages require a larger font size to be used.
This chart shows the various SoundBridge models, and their support for international character display. If the chart indicates "16", this means that those characters can only be displayed in 16-pixel fonts and larger. You may need to change the text size on your SoundBridge to display these characters. To do this, with the SoundBridge on, press the "bright" button on the remote (on newer remotes, this is shown with a symbol that looks like a TV or computer monitor), and then use the up and down arrows to adjust the font and size.

(*)M1000 and M2000 include partial support for Chinese characters. Not all characters are available.
Should you choose to turn off Data Upload, you may still use the Radio Roku service. However, your SoundBridge will not be able to keep Presets synchronized with the Radio Roku site, because the data upload system is used to notify the Radio Roku service when Presets change on the SoundBridge, and in turn to check for Presets changed on the service.
Information about the Data Upload feature
By default, your SoundBridge is set to periodically upload certain information to Roku's servers. This information includes diagnostic information about any problems your SoundBridge may have encountered, reliability information about the Internet streams you've listened to (for example, how frequently a stream needs to rebuffer), and current-track information to support Radio Roku's "Now Playing" feature. All data concerning specific stations and content played is uploaded in a way that does not tie the information to a specific SoundBridge unit or customer. The data is only used in aggregate to support the operation of Radio Roku. Diagnostic information is used to improve the quality of SoundBridge software by noting when a serious error condition occurs (for example, a crash and reboot).
Several features of the Radio Roku site use Roku's RCP control protocol to interact with the SoundBridge devices on your local network. These features include:
Current-song display in the "My SoundBridge" widget
Volume control
Power/Play/Pause control
"Play on SoundBridge" links for stations on the Radio Roku site
SoundBridge discovery
Upgrade of software via Radio Roku web page controls
If network control is turned off, your SoundBridge will still be able to browse and play content from the Radio Roku database, and you will be able to set and retrieve favorite stations and Presets (provided that Data Upload is enabled), but none of the features listed above will be available. With Network Control disabled, updates of Presets on the web site will take up to 10 minutes to appear on your SoundBridge unit.
